closeboysmileHEARTS RIPE FOR HARVEST: AGES 4-14 IN THE 10/40 WINDOW

Smiles and Statistics

Everything we do at GHM is directed at putting smiles on the faces of men, women, and children in Central Asia and the Middle East – not temporary happy smiles arising out of situations which will last only a few moments, but smiles reflecting the eternal joy of salvation. These are real people to us, with real challenges, and they need the Lord.  We never forget that.

However, our supporters donate to us with the understanding that we’ve done our homework.  You want us to use your dollar to effectively reach the lost, so your treasure will not be squandered. To do that, we utilize all the relevant statistics to strategize our plans.

The 10/40 Window

second-10-40

The latest relevant statistics focus on an area popularly called the 10/40 Window.  This is the area of the world, delineated by the 10th and 40th lines of latitude, where the greatest numbers of people unreached by the Gospel are located.

GHM hearts map
Hearts indicate countries where GHM is involved through satellite broadcasting, phone/text counseling, and home pastor training.

When you compare this map with the GHM Heart Map, it is easy to see why we have chosen Central Asia and the Middle East as our target areas.  Not only are these countries geographically contiguous, they also share a cultural heart.  In addition, while political boundaries divide the areas into countries, the dominant languages spill across borders with little attention to the name of the country.

The 4/14 Age Group

Another important statistic for this region is the fact that 70% of the world’s 4-14 year olds live within these longitudinal meridians.  According to groups like Compassion International and the Window International Network, that’s about 833,000,000 lives. While children are not our sole target in these areas, many ministries do have the strategy of reaching out to children to become global agents for change.

one_hope_logo2One of those child-focused ministry groups is One Hope.  For thirty years their focus has been providing God’s Word to every child.  This year they plan to reach 101 million children with the Gospel and they are partnering with us to reach Azerbaijani & Uzbek-speaking children.

The 26 Free Tablets

One Hope utilizes many innovative and creative mediums to spread the Word and they partner with other ministries to reach their goals.  Many ministries share the the same goals as One Hope and each of us has developed our own effective tools.  Like GHM, One Hope doesn’t consider the job done just because someone has had an opportunity to hear the Gospel.  Both of our ministries want to create a relationship with our viewers to build seekers and new converts into strong Christians.

This is why One Hope has partnered with us for translating our Children’s Programs into Azerbaijani and offering 26 Free Tablets to our Uzbek and Azerbaijani audiences in a contest.  When these programs are shown, we’ll also announce the Tablet contest and ask viewers to enter by providing a little contact information.

Not only will we give away 26 Tablets loaded with all our programming in Uzbek and Azerbaijani, we’ll receive contact information for millions of families across the region. That information will be used by both ministries to reach out to these families on the ground. What a marvelous partnership!

Expanding Our Reach Through Dubbing

dsc_0218HEARTS ON THE MOVE: REACHING MORE PEOPLE WITH LESS MONEY

The Cost of Production

We’ll be honest with you.  Filming a new season of shows is one of our favorite ways to spend a week.  It gets all of us together in the same room being creative.  We see members of our cast and crew that we only see during filming.  Many of our techs live here, but they have other full-time employment which means we only see them at shoots.  Volunteers come in to help out.  We have meals together, pray together, and worship together.  We love it.

However, video shoots are wildly expensive and they are only the tip of the iceberg.  Once the film is in the can, so to speak, the production process has just begun. Depending on the complexity of the program, and the complications experienced during the shoot, it can take from six months to a year to get a show ready for broadcast.  Post production represents a huge expenditure of  both personnel and equipment.

The expense is well worth it.  Our programs are broadcast on four satellites, each of which reaches hundreds of millions of men, women, and children in Central Asia and the Middle East.  This form of ministry is by far the most cost effective ministry available and in places such as our target countries; it is the only way to reach unbelievers in a way that is safe for us and for them.

And satellite broadcasting is just the beginning!  We upload our videos to several sites, like Vimeo and globalheartmedia.org where our audiences can stream them 24 hours a day, every day.  We are also able to download the programming to memory sticks and SD Cards for on-the-ground distribution.  We’re even discussing using portable video players inside a few of our target countries to raise awareness of our programs among House Churches.  As you can see, we squeeze each episode filmed for the maximum exposure.

The Magic of Lip Synch Dubbing

Several times in recent months we have mentioned our new lip-synch dubbing project. We’re transforming Uzbek Hikoyalar Zamini into Azerbaijani Hekayeler Alemi (Story Land in both languages).

Filming and producing a new season costs approximately $130,000 from start to finish. Transforming a completed episode into a new language costs about $30,000.  That’s an approximate $100,000 in savings!   It’s easy to see the economy lip-synch dubbing brings to our productions.  Suddenly, for a fraction of the cost of a new program, we can reach a whole new audience.  The cultural feel of the programs are appropriate throughout Central Asia and the Middle East, but new languages make them readily accessible to children in various language groups.

For our current lip-synch project, another ministry has partnered with us financially, because Story World so perfectly fits their target audience in Azerbaijan and places in Iran where Azerbaijani is the predominant language.  We hope one day we are able to lip-synch all of our completed programming into other languages, like Farsi, Arabic, and the Turkish language.  We feel this will allow us to make the best use of the programs God has allowed us to produce.  We’d love for you to help us afford this worthy goal.

Little Bear Travels to Azerbaijan and Beyond

HEARTS ON THE MOVE: STORY LAND TAKES FLIGHT

A Change of Venue

If you were about eight years old and you lived in Uzbekistan, your favorite program might be Hikoyalar Zamini (Story Land) and your favorite character might be Ayipolvon, Strong Puppet Bear. (At GHM we call him, Little Bear, but an Uzbek never would.)  Perhaps your mom likes to watch Shukar Aytayman (I Am Thankful), a women’s talk show, and your dad is a big fan of Hayot Noni (Bread of Life), where men discuss life while cooking special meals.

If you’re an eight year old Azeri, in Azerbaijan or Iran, your mom might watch Sirin Sobat (Sweet Conversations), but if you wanted to enjoy Little Bear, you’d have to know how to understand Uzbek–and we’re working on that.  Little Bear is coming to Azerbaijan!

A Change of Language

The most expensive item in our budget is the production of new episodes.  It takes a huge investment of resources to produce the 13 episode series required by the satellites to broadcast our programming.  The response we get from our audience makes it worthwhile. How can you put a value on hearts being won to the Good News of Jesus Christ?  We can’t, but we only have a limited amount of resources available to us for producing programming.

Much of what is aired on Central Asian and Middle Eastern television is American television shows and movies with subtitles.  Some programs have the native languages dubbed in, but usually the dubbing is quickly and cheaply done and it shows.  The dialog does not match the moving mouths of the speakers.  We’ve all seen foreign films like that. It’s distracting and takes away from the enjoyment of watching.

However, there is a dubbing procedure called lip-synch dubbing that is almost invisible to the audience.  The translation is carefully timed to match the each movement of the mouth.  A video specialist might pick it up immediately, but the casual audience will most likely not even notice.  That’s what we’re using to take  Ayipolvon  (Little Bear) to Azerbaijan.

When we take the message of Christ to unbelievers in Central Asia and the Middle East, we don’t want anything to get in the way of the message.  That’s the reason natives from that part of the world, speaking their own heart languages, host our programs. However, because of the cost of associated with creating new programming, we are taking advantage of lip-synch dubbing to bring Little Bear to Azerbaijani-speaking children.

Rest assured that native Azerbaijani speakers are the ones dubbing in the new language for Little Bear.  In fact, in January we introduced you to Timothy, an Azerbaijani musician who is helping us with this project.

HEARTS ON THE MOVE: HAYVONOT ZAMINI (ANIMAL WORLD)

A Family Favorite

As in America, families in Central Asia and the Middle East long for shows that will entertain the whole family.  They like something wholesome, which is appropriate for all ages, but the adults prefer not to watch cartoons and silly movies.  Since animals are something all ages find interesting, Hayvonot Zamini (Animal World), is a perfect fit.

In the Beginning

capture-season-1-animal-world
Season One of Animal World

Hayvonot Zamini was among the first programs produced by GHM, but the first season featured a female host instead of the energetic Abror.  By the time we were ready for the second season, she was no longer available and we had already observed Abror’s on-screen charisma in Hikoyalar Zamini (Story Land).  We knew he was perfect for Animal World.

Many of the components that went into the first season are still an important part of the show.  The safari-themed set with it’s “magic” window and phone is still the set we use today, but we’ve changed other things besides the series’ host.  For instance, while the first season merely used stock animal footage to discuss the animals featured on the show, Abror has been to many zoos and wildlife parks to interact directly with the animals and sometimes the animal co-stars actually come to the set.

Abror & Animals
Behind Abror and the alpaca is the “magic” window which allows viewers to see animals in their various habitats or Abror at the zoo.

The Real Star is the Creator

Abror is the host of the program and animals of all types are featured, but the real star of Hayvonot Zamini is the Lord, our God. In every episode, regardless of the animal featured, God is recognized as the Creator of the universe and every species in it.

The programs contain important scientific facts about all the animals and explains why they are unique and wonderful, but Abror goes on to point out that it is God who has created these animals with their specific attributes.  He explains that it is God, not some random force of science, which puts horns on an antelope or allows a chrysalis to turn into a butterfly.

Abror also uses the characteristics of the animals to teach important lessons about being a Child of God.  For instance, he uses the habits of the Wildebeest as an example of how important it is for us to work together and encourage one another.

The Bible is the Heart of Each Show

Along with the telephone announcing the arrival of the animals on the other side of the “magic” window, a green book in a beautiful wooden stand is featured on the set.  That green book is Abror’s Bible in the Uzbek language.  Even while he is introducing the animals and explaining their habits, attributes, and habitats, he is referring to the Bible and urging the audience to read it and get to know the God of the Bible.

The audience may watch the program for the animals, but before it’s over, Abror has shared the Good News of the Bible with them.  This is how we use the cultural heart to spread the spiritual message of the Lord Jesus Christ.

HEARTS AFLAME: AT GHM, EVEN ACCOUNTING IS A MINISTRY

Count on Karla

When most of you think about GHM, you’re not thinking of office personnel.  However, if you were to ask someone inside GHM who we consider to be most critical to our operations, you’d hear the name Karla Eden. A lot.  She joined us in May of 2016 and are we ever grateful for her.  We didn’t know how much we needed her until we turned our books over to her.

Groomed by God for GHM

Karla grew up in a small town in Iowa and was raised in the church.  In high school she worked on staff at Lutheran  Camp Okoboji.  She knew who was at the camp for the week by what was delivered to the kitchen where she worked: prune juice for seniors and PopTarts for kids.

That’s when the Christian faith she’d grown up with became her own.  She decided God was calling her to step out in faith and follow Him with her entire life.  She wasn’t sure what that would look like, but she was interested in finding out.

She had two older sisters who became CPA’s and she followed in their footsteps, graduating from the University of Iowa.  She completed her CPA, in one sitting, right after graduation and headed to Texas where jobs were more abundant.

A Focus on Family

Karla worked in accounting for about ten years and along the way she married a handsome fellow she’d met in college.  He’d followed her to Texas for the jobs, and together they formed a family.  Karla discovered stepping out in faith and following God meant focusing on her roles as a wife to Brian and a mother to her three kids.  Her happy family, with strong Christian values, is a testament to her journey with God.

For 21 years Karla’s primary occupation was Mom, a role she loves and cherishes, even still.  However, when her third child got her driver’s license, she suddenly had some time on her hands.  She’d planned on returning to accounting at some point and had kept her credentials current, so she looked around for an opportunity.  She was interested in working, but only part time, because she wanted to keep the job of being Mom at the top of her list of priorities.

An Exchange of Blessings

We’d be hard pressed to adequately describe how much we needed Karla; that’s not to short-change anyone who handled our books before, but she just gets it.  She stays about three steps ahead of us in everything from budgeting to taxes to donor letters.  If it has anything to do with keeping the books and financial reporting, we don’t have to worry about it.  Karla’s got it covered. Her work allows us to stay focused on our primary directives of reaching the Most Unreached.

When asked what her favorite thing about GHM might be, she couldn’t think of one thing-she had a list:  the mission, the people, the location, and the flexibility.  She is greatly impressed by the Central Asians we work with and for. “They have enormous hearts and risk so much for their faith,” she remarked.  She’s amazed by the things we take for granted, like openly carrying Bibles and public worship, which are impossible, or at least very risky, for our Central Asian and Middle Eastern friends in their own countries.

Of the traditions she’s learned of from Central Asia and the Middle East, her favorite is the Uzbek Women’s Day.  All the men in a woman’s life, husband, bosses, sons, friends – all the men – are required to honor her and give her gifts on this day.  Karla thinks that’s a pretty good idea.

HEARTS OVERFLOWING: ALL THEY NEED IS YOUR LOVE

Valentine’s Day Isn’t Just for Lovers Anymore

The world is changing.  Definitions, boundaries, and expectations are flexible.  Valentine’s Day is a great example.  What was once the private territory of romantic love is now celebrated by best friends, relatives, and lovers alike.

In many places around the world, Valentine’s Day is just another day on the calendar and love, romantic or not, isn’t a consideration.  Their lives are filled with violence, turmoil, hate, and hopelessness.  Many of these people live in Central Asia and the Middle East.

TV Programming that Changes Lives

GHM TV Personalities

Then one day, someone with a hurting heart tunes in to one of our television programs. Perhaps a friend recommended it or they happened on it while looking for something to watch.  Imagine their surprise when they see joyful people speaking in their very own heart language offering the gift of hope.

GHM programming is unique in that we reach out to the cultural heart to build a bridge to spiritual truth.  Most of our potential viewers have no interest in watching a religious program of any sort.  They are fed up with religion.  So we provide them something of interest and then offer something more:

Umida
Central Asian women discuss the challenges of divorced women or the plight of sex slaves in a viewer’s own country. The stories match the viewer’s own story. Imagine the joy of discovering the freedom Jesus Christ offers to the abused.
1-8441
A popular well-known musician is being interviewed by a smiling woman. Female viewers are intrigued, because smiling is foreign to them. Imagine learning Christ offers His joy to everyone.
dsc_0151
Central Asian men in a kitchen, preparing food for a special occasion, discuss the challenges of leading a family in difficult times. The viewer might watch to get the recipe, but he continues watching because answers to his own problems can be found in the Bible.
Abror & Animals
A delightful show about animals features an enthusiastic host from their own country describing an exotic species a family has never seen before. They’re happy to see the animal, but they are amazed that the same Creator God who equipped the animal to live in its habitat has also made provision for the viewers.

Evidence of Lives Changed

We know our programs are making a difference.  We train and mentor home pastors in our target countries, who tell us the miraculous results of people watching our programs.  We get calls, emails and texts from people begging to learn more about the Lord Jesus Christ and the God of the Bible.  We walk step-by-step in ministry with Central Asians and Middle Easterners who would still be walking in darkness, but for their encounter with Global Heart Ministries.

We may not be able to change the oppressive government regimes they live under or improve their financial outlook overnight, but when hope is introduced to their lives, they change.  Instead of living in fear, they invite persecution as a badge of honor.  An arrest is an opportunity to save the soul of a policeman.

While we are joyful at every life changed, we are also proud of contributing to positive changes happening in our target countries.  We have met Ministers of Culture who enjoy Sweet Conversations.  New presidents are holding ceremonies to introduce a Bible in the native tongue.  Policemen are as interested in grace as they are in writing a ticket.

Open Your Heart Capacity-Building Capital Campaign

Over a decade ago, Steve Sharp first traveled to Central Asia to record a praise and worship CD in the native heart language of the Turkmen people.  Today, Global Heart Media programs reach hundreds of millions in Central Asia and the Middle East in a variety formats and languages.  It’s been a long hard journey, full of joy to be sure, but challenging nonetheless.

God has gone before us opening doors and making opportunities for us, but the needs of the ministry are great.  We need more people on our staff.  Some of our filming and editing equipment is bordering on obsolete.  We have more opportunity than we have capacity to fulfill.  We need your support.

We need to raise more than one million dollars over and above our annual budget during the next two years to substantially increase and strengthen our reach.  In the coming days we’ll be telling you more about the Open Your Heart Capacity-Building Capital Campaign, but it’s not too early to participate.  We have already raised nearly $140,000 and your contribution could help us reach our ambitious goal.  Valentine’s Day would be a perfect time to show your love to the people in Central Asia and the Middle East who need it so badly.

Come Along and Visit Story Land

Abror and Little Bear

HEARTS ON THE MOVE: HIKOYALAR ZAMINI (STORY LAND)WITH ABROR AND LITTLE BEAR

A Dynamic Duo

Several years ago, our founder, Steve Sharp, considered what format would be best utilized for introducing children to the Gospel.  Puppets seemed like a good idea.  He was still working as a Minister of Music back in those days and from his church’s members, he was able to recruit puppeteers.  He had the rights to an animated Bible stories series, but he wanted present the animation in a format that would engage Uzbek children and connect what was taught in the Bible with their every day lives.

That’s about the time Abror joined our ministry.  His high energy and heart for sharing the Gospel made him a perfect host for the show, but he needed a sidekick.  One of the primary goals of our ministry is to reach the cultural heart of our viewers, so we couldn’t choose any old puppet from a local big box store.  Much research was done and eventually GHM ordered a culturally appropriate bear puppet from a Russian company.  That puppet is Little Bear.  A dynamic duo was born.

What Viewers Don’t See

While Little Bear is the character loved and enjoyed by children all over Uzbekistan, they have no idea a very pretty lady is behind their friend’s gestures, personality and action.  Lori James, who does hair and make-up for our programs, is also the puppeteer who gives life to Little Bear.

Example of a green suited puppeteer with a bird puppet.
Example of a green suited puppeteer with a bird puppet.

To manipulate Little Bear during a scene, she dons a green screen suit for filming.  Then our technicians edit her out of the scene and the magic of Abror and Little Bear is all that’s left to enchant the viewers.

What the Viewers Do See

When an Uzbek child tunes in to see Abror and Little Bear, it’s like being part of a conversation with friends.  Abror and Little Bear chat about every day life – a victory, a challenge, a disappointment or a frustration.  Abror offers Little Bear advice or encouragement about his situation and then relates it to a story from the Bible.  Little Bear is always interested in learning more about the Bible story, so Abror grabs a sketch book to illustrate the story and that’s where we add the animated segment.

From time to time, the scene cuts back to Abror and Little Bear who discuss how the Bible story relates to Little Bear’s situation.  In the end, Little Bear shares his personal response to the Bible Story.  Uzbek children walk away with the understanding that Jesus loves and cares for them, and that the Bible has answers to all their questions about life.  To watch an episode follow this link: https://vimeo.com/131666923.

The Uzbek Hikoyalar Zamini Becomes the Azerbaijani Hekayeler Alemi

The popularity of Abror and Little Bear cannot be denied.  In fact, they are so well-loved we are expanding their audience.  Hikoyalar Zamini is being translated and lip-synch dubbed into other languages, beginning with Azerbaijani.  Next up, if funding is available, Farsi.  We hope one day children all over the Middle East and Central Asia will grow to love Abror and Little Bear, the way our Uzbek friends do.

Lip-synch dubbing is more precise than merely throwing a new soundtrack under existing video.  In lip-synch dubbing, the dialog in the new language is timed to match the moving lips of the speakers.  This is detailed and exacting process, but the result is amazing.  We can’t wait to begin airing the episodes for Azerbaijanis.

Speaking of links, if you read last week’s blog on social media, then you might have noticed our Facebook handle was a little different than the rest of them.  Well, there’s a reason for that.

As we’ve worked on expanding our Heart Print, we’ve focused on connecting with our American friends to build a strong audience.  We thought we’d need that to gain the attention of our viewers in Central Asia and the Middle East.  To our surprise, they were ahead of us.  One day we realized our friends across Central Asia and the Middle East had not only found our Facebook page, they were sharing it with their friends.

As the number of international friendships grew, we realized the Lord had been ahead of us – again. While our American friends know us as Global Heart Ministries, we broadcast under the d.b.a. of Global Heart Media. In order to better serve our international audience we’ve changed our “handle” on Facebook to Global Heart Media and will be migrating that change over the rest of our Heart Print in the future.

How to Get Social with GHM

HEARTS OVERFLOWING: FACEBOOK, WORDPRESS, INSTAGRAM AND TWITTER

Social Media-Heart PrintThe GHM Heart Print

Social Media is the 21st century’s communications tool of choice.  Whether you’re only on Facebook to see your grandkids’ pictures or you’re constantly online to share, chat, and like, pretty much everyone, all around the world, uses social media.  While media experts call the sum total of an entity’s social media presence a “foot print,” here at GHM, we call our social media persona our “Heart Print.”

We’re pretty excited about that Heart Print these days.  While no one would be surprised to discover most of our friends on Facebook are Americans, you might not realize the next largest group is from Afghanistan and we have followers in Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kazakhstan.  If you take a look at the stats on our blog, the graphic showing where our readers come from looks like a meeting of the United Nations.

social mediaThe Arithmetic of Algorithms

If you follow our feeds, you’ll stay up to date our latest developments all over the world, but you’ll also do something even more important. You’ll help us greatly increase the number of people we’re able to reach with our message.  Millions watch our programs via satellite.  Imagine being able to help us reach even more hurting hearts just with the simple click of your mouse.

Though it may seem the circulation of items on social media is random, it’s actually based on very specific algorithms. The most basic building block for those algorithms is the number of people following a feed. Believe it or not, by simply following our blog or liking a post on Facebook, you could help us reach someone in Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan with the Good News.

We’re Glad You’re Here

You may have arrived at this blog post by a number of means.  You may have seen us on Facebook or maybe a friend forwarded it to your inbox.  However you arrived, we’re glad you made it.  If you’d like to follow this blog, there are two ways to do it:

  • If you’re someone who uses Facebook regularly, you can like and follow us there.
  • Or if you’d prefer for a link of the latest blog articles to be forwarded directly to you via email, you can follow the blog.
  • If you do both, it’s like turbocharging the algorithms.

Below you will find instructions to help you connect with our Heart Beat on various pages.  To ensure these sites notify you of our posts, we recommend you go online from a computer. What you see on your phone is truncated and you may not be able to follow the steps as outlined. Also, while your phone may allow you to like a post, some phones will not show you the option to follow our feed.

Being a Social Media Advocate is just one of the ways you can partner with Global Heart Ministries to fulfill The Great Commission in this generation. Together we can bring the light and the truth of Jesus Christ right into the living rooms of every deceived child, every oppressed woman, and every hurting home. This is our message. This is our call.

We invite you to join this vision as a volunteer, a prayer warrior, or a financial donor.  Contact us today by phone or email.  Let us know how you’d like to partner with us as we reach out to the Most Unreached Regions of the World.
