HEARTS AFLAME: OUR HB, A WOMAN OF MANY FACETS
Assisting More Than Our Executive
For many, the title “executive assistant” brings up the image of someone at the beck and call of a human powerhouse, devoted to carrying out every demand and acting as a gatekeeper, sort of like Andy in The Devil Wears Prada or Blake in Madame Secretary.
While Steve Sharp, our President/CEO & Founder, is certainly a human powerhouse, his executive assistant breaks the stereotype. Hannah Beth or HB (never just Hannah) usually anticipates Steve’s needs before he knows he has them, and this activity accounts for only a portion of her day. The rest of the time she’s assisting everyone else involved in the ministry, from the staff accountant to our teaching pastor in Central Asia. If she had the time, she could probably do most of our jobs at least as well as we can – but she’s gracious enough to pretend that’s not so.
A Miracle in the Making
Trying to explain how Hannah Beth made the Grand Jete’ from an archaeological dig in Central Texas to a ministry devoted to spreading the Gospel in Central Asia via an apartment in Paris, France would take more than one blog. She’d grown up as a many-times-over PK (preacher’s kid) who just happened to spend as much time in tutus and toe shoes as she did in church pews. She majored in Anthropology at Baylor University and was two weeks into a temporary position in Tyler, Texas when she “coincidentally” met Steve Sharp. (Go ahead and catch your breath, the ride has just begun!)
Hannah Beth accepted Christ at the age of 8. There was no great drama in her conversion story. The miracle has been His faithfulness and constancy – and perhaps the way He’s managed to tie up so many seemingly loose ends into one marvelous testimony.
A Blessing to Global Heart Ministries
Though her first love was dance, two sets of nomadic grandparents instilled a curiosity for the distant and the faraway in Hannah Beth at an early age. At Baylor she “discovered there was an entire FIELD dedicated to learning [about] cultures and people different from [herself].” She didn’t exactly hang up her ballet slippers, but she added a trowel to her dance bag for archaeological field studies and spent her final semester in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
By the time Hannah Beth graduated, she’d already done more living than many of us ever get around to. Back in the States, she wasn’t sure how to turn all her loves and experiences into a career. “During a long journey in the spring and summer of 2015, I realized how important this field of Anthropology could be to the Kingdom,” said Hannah Beth. She “prayed and waited and looked for ways to use [her] skills and passions and talents to bring the gospel to those who are lost and hurting.”
You know how the story turns out. Hannah Beth loves “getting to work alongside people from all over the world…hearing them speak in their native languages, learning how their culture[s]…are either VERY different or strangely similar…[she] cannot imagine living in the kind of persecution they live with on a daily basis, or the faith it takes to follow God’s instructions in a dream to move to the other side of the globe. Getting to work alongside these giants of faith is a daily impact.” For the rest of us, getting to work with Hannah Beth is a blessing. Here’s a few more shots for you to enjoy.
