Living in the Time of Acts

dreamsHEARTS RIPE FOR HARVEST: VISIONS, DREAMS & TECHNOLOGY

The Spirit is Moving in Central Asia and the Middle East

If you were chatting with your next door neighbor in your American suburb and they told you Jesus had come to them last night in a dream, what would you think?  Perhaps you’d assume they were a nut case or some sort of religious fanatic.  That’s a possibility, but if you were involved in ministry in Central Asia and the Middle East, real dreams of Jesus, visions and prophesy are every day occurrences.

Members of the GHM staff recently attended a conference for organizations ministering to one of our target countries.  We heard story after story of believers who were wrenched away from Islam by experiences similar to the apostle Paul.  We were reminded over and over of Acts 2:17:

“And it shall be in the last days,” God says,”That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.”

We know just how real these testimonies of dreams and visions are, because we hear about them so frequently from the people we minister to.  We’d like to share one of the stories we heard at the conference, but for the sake of security, we can’t tell you the country or the name of the believer.  It doesn’t really matter, because we’ve heard the same sort of story so many times from  many of our target countries, but we’ll call this believer Sophia.

Jesus Came in a Dream

sewing-machineSophia was a good Muslim.  She ran a school for tailors in a major city.  She was married and had a daughter.  Things were as good as they could be in that part of the world.

Then one night, Jesus came to Sophia in a dream.  He revealed the Gospel to her and told her how to get a Bible.  The experience was so remarkable that Sophia immediately believed and she got her Bible by means that most of us would consider miraculous.

phoneTwo Years in Isolation, Then a Church

For two years Sophia never met another believer in her country.  She watched some Christian programming via satellite and called the number on the screen.  When she called, she was connected to a woman who became her spiritual mentor.  They communicated almost daily over the phone, but she knew no other believers.  After awhile she shared her faith with her husband who also believed, but they were completely isolated from any of the worship and fellowship American believers so casually take for granted.

When the two years were up, Sophia’s phone mentor suggested it was time for her to start a secret church in her home.  Sophia couldn’t believe she was called to do any such thing.  For one thing, she had this very busy tailoring school operating out of her home.  How could she also operate a secret church in the same place.

Like Gideon, Sophia laid out a fleece – one she thought was pretty safe.  If no one signed up for the next session of her wildly popular  tailoring school, then she should start a church.  Needless to say, all her potential students melted away and when the session’s deadline came along, there was no one to teach.

With fear and trepidation, Sophia started her secret house church with the help of her phone mentor.  Things went well for awhile, but then one of the church’s members was arrested.  She was alerted of the danger and was not even able to pack a bag.  She and her family became refugees in a strange land.  Eventually, they came to America where she now ministers to her fellow countrymen using the same broadcast technology GHM does.
