HEARTS AFLAME: LORI, FIRST STOP ON A GHM SET
The Call Sheet
One of the most important documents associated with a GHM shoot is the call sheet, prepared by Steve’s executive assistant, Hannah Beth. Different people are needed on set at different times. By following the call sheet, the crew gets there when they’re needed and no one is just standing around waiting to be needed (theoretically).
The earliest calls are always for the talent and Lori James, our hair and make-up artist, because nothing else can happen until the talent is ready. Lori then remains on hand for touch-ups and such.
We usually film an entire season of 13 episodes during a one week period, so multiple episodes are shot over the course of any day. When we’re shooting a men’s show, like we did in September, Lori’s job is pretty easy. All the guys have to do is be careful when they change their shirts, but with the women’s shows, the wardrobe change can also mean a change of hairstyle and a complete change of make-up colors.
During the last Sweet Conversations shoot, Lori was having great difficulty with a re-occurring slipped disk. So much difficulty, Narmin and Tarana were laying on a sofa for make-up applications, in order to minimize the pressure on the slipped disk. Finally mid-week, Lori went to the doctor and she was pulled from the shoot immediately and scheduled for surgery. We limped through the rest of the shoot with a friend of Lori’s, but we really missed Lori!
One of the reasons she was so missed is her willingness to do anything. When the cast is dressed and ready for the set, Lori jumps in to help wherever she can. She’s great at time-keeping, spotting great photo ops, helping set the stage, washing dishes on the cooking set and anything else that’s needed. She’s a great contribution to the set, stepping up to do whatever needs doing.
There at the Beginning
Lori has been an important volunteer for GHM since the beginning. She was working with the children at Steve’s church when the first of the GHM children’s shows were being planned. Steve approached her about helping with the puppets, completely unaware this stay-at-home mom had skills in hair & make-up. Her twelve year hiatus from the salon was over and she’s also a great puppeteer. She’s been a part of every program we’ve filmed since the very first.
When we kicked off Esther’s Friends, Lori was there for us, as she always is. In fact, she was one of the table hostesses at our Open Hearts Tea in August and her table was voted Most Elegant. She’s ready to help us whenever there are envelopes to address and stuff.
A Peek at Lori Off the Set
When Lori is not helping us out with a shoot, she’s a wife and a stay-at-home-mom. She came to know the Lord at 10, because a local church sent a bus to the government apartments where she grew up.
She was drawn to GHM, first because of the passion Steve had for it, but then she developed a passion of her own as she got to know the people from Central Asia. Her favorite thing about the ministry is the wonderful, life-long friendships she is building.
She’s learned there are both differences and commonalities between her American life and the lives of the women in Central Asia. Her biggest surprise has been learning how approachable and loving these Central Asians are. When asked the main thing she wanted others to know about the people GHM ministers to, she said:
“How much the people truly need Christ! So many of the problems we hear about within the culture is just the absence of a loving God! I have seen first hand when Christ is living in their hearts, how they treat one another! Nothing like what you hear about. I’ve seen a husband love and treat his wife with respect. A Central Asian man on a cooking program be respectful and gracious. When we let our Jesus show in us, we are all children of God, not people living in different cultures. “
