HEARTS OVERFLOWING: AN AFTERNOON OF TASTES, TEARS & TESTIMONIES
Setting the Scene for Fun
After church on Sunday, August 28th, seventeen hostesses arrived at The Hope Center with boxes of plates, cups, flatware and decorations. Each one was there to set a table to host seven friends who were coming to learn
more about Global Heart Ministries. As the hostesses decorated their tables, the room erupted into a lot of laughter and a little competition, because the guests would be voting for their favorite table setting.
Though the doors of the event were not scheduled to open until 3:30, by 2:45 the lobby of The Hope Center began to fill up with party-frocked ladies, many of them in hats. Excitement was at fever pitch by the time the women were allowed into the event.
And the Award Goes To
Once the doors opened, guests roamed the room checking out each table to choose their favorites. The winners were:
Getting Down to Business
Votes cast, guests settled at the festive tables, welcomed by Doris Sparks, Board Member of GHM. Then teacups were filled, sandwiches passed and desserts offered. As ladies sipped, tasted and chatted, no one paid any attention to the burka-clad woman entering the room. She was completely invisible as she wandered among the tables.
Then suddenly, everyone’s attention was riveted to the front of the room, because the intruder had climbed to the stage, picked up a microphone and begun to speak. The intruder was actually Safeeya Schnaufer of e3 Partners, a sister ministry of GHM at The Hope Center. Safeeya, grew up in a very restrictive Muslim community in Kuwait and the story of her early life would be all too familiar to the women we minister to in Central Asia and the Middle East.
Then Safeeya was joined on the stage by three other ladies who grew up under the same circumstances in other Muslim countries and were also freed from the bondage of Islam by the Christ; the GHM TV hosts, Narmin, Tach and Umida. President, CEO and Founder of GHM, Steve Sharp led the women in a conversation which educated the guests about the true lives of women in Muslim countries. There was barely a dry eye in the room.
After the panel discussion and some comments from Steve about the ministry, Jane Sadek, Volunteer Coordinator, came to the podium and made an impassioned plea for the women in the room to join Esther’s Friends, a new organization for GHM volunteers. About a third of the women in the room signed up for Esther’s Friends that day and many also made generous donations.
