Introducing the Host of Azerbaijan’s Sweet Conversations

Narmin Backus of Sweet Conversations

A Smile as Big as Her Heart for Ministry

Were you to meet Narmin Backus on the street, chances are she’d immediately win your heart with her smile – the same smile which wins Azerbaijani hearts to Jesus Christ on GHM’s Sweet Conversations.

“For Such a Time as This”

In Esther 4:14 Mordecai urges his niece to action saying, “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.”  Like Queen Esther, Narmin grew up having no idea of the part she’d play in God’s plans for her country and like that ancient queen, she’s being used in a mighty way.

Of her early life, Narmin said, “I did not grow up knowing much about Christianity.  I knew about [it] mostly from movies and a little bit from some Christian friends who lived in Azerbaijan and some foreign missionaries.” Then Ken Backus’ career brought him to Azerbaijan.  The two met, fell in love and were married, which is a story within itself – but we’ll save it for another day.

“Divinely Directed” Moves

God’s plan called for Narmin to live closer to GHM, but in the meantime Jesus Christ was more interested in winning her heart.  From Baku, in Azerbaijan, Ken and Narmin moved to the UK, then to the States.  Their first stop in the US was Ohio, but soon they arrived in Texas.

Narmin became a Christian after moving to the States.  She cites several verses in the gospel of John as being meaningful to her journey of faith.  “Ultimately what amazed me and touched my heart deeply is His love towards me a sinner. His forgiveness and mercy as a result of His amazing and unconditional love.”

Our move [to Texas] was work related but we believe it was Divinely directed,” because it was that move which eventually led to her involvement in Sweet Conversations.

Dual Roles on the Set

Along with hosting Sweet Conversations, Narmin has another job on the set.  She’s an accomplished artist who creates wonderful paintings based on Bible stories she and her co-host discuss on the show.  The highlight of every show is the unveiling of her newest work.

I prayed for the Lord to use me anyway He wants and especially my art and artist abilities. Not long after that, I met the founder of GHM, Mr. Steve Sharp at a gathering of believers of Muslim background. We talked about the possibility of leading an Azerbaijani program for women and the rest is the history.”
